Melasmex-Q™ Aftercare Instructions

Specialist post-treatment care for melasma and mixed-depth pigmentation

Thank you for choosing Melasmex-Q™, our advanced low-fluence laser protocol designed specifically for melasma.
Melasma is a sensitive and reactive condition, and the right aftercare is essential for achieving safe, effective, and long-lasting improvement.

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Your skin may look normal, or slightly pink for a short time.

  • Melasma can temporarily darken before it begins to lighten — this is normal.

  • Most people experience no downtime and return to normal activities immediately.

  • Improvements develop gradually over several weeks, often with cumulative sessions.

Essential Aftercare

1. Strict Sun Protection (most important)

Melasma is extremely sun-sensitive. UV and visible light can reactivate pigment even after successful treatment.

For best results:

  • Apply SPF 50 every morning to the entire face.

  • Choose a mineral or tinted SPF if possible (extra protection against visible light).

  • Reapply SPF during the day if outdoors or exposed to daylight through windows.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, tanning, and sunbeds completely.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outside.

Consistent sun protection is the single most important factor in maintaining improvement.

2. Be gentle for the first 48–72 hours

Avoid anything that heats, irritates or inflames the skin:

  • hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, Jacuzzis

  • intense exercise

  • scrubs, peels, exfoliants

  • retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin, adapalene, retinal)

  • acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic)

  • vitamin C serums

  • home devices or facial gadgets

Use a simple moisturiser if the skin feels dry or warm.

3. Avoid friction and aggressive skincare

For the first few days:

  • do not rub or scrub your face

  • avoid rough towels or grainy exfoliants

  • avoid strong cleansers or astringents

  • avoid waxing, threading, bleaching creams, or hair-removal creams

Melasma worsens easily when the skin barrier is disrupted.

4. Restart pigment-control skincare as advised

Your practitioner may recommend creams that help stabilise melasma, such as:

  • azelaic acid

  • kojic acid

  • niacinamide

  • hydroquinone (short, structured courses only)

If prescribed, you will be advised when to restart these — usually 48–72 hours after treatment, once the skin has settled.

These products help support and maintain your laser results.

5. Avoid heat and sweating for 48 hours

Heat can trigger melasma just like UV does.
Avoid:

  • saunas / steam rooms

  • hot yoga

  • long hot baths

  • heavy workouts

  • facial steaming

Let the skin remain cool and calm in the first two days after treatment.

6. Makeup and Skincare

  • Makeup may usually be worn the next day if the skin feels comfortable.

  • Use gentle, non-irritating products for the first few days.

  • Avoid new or untested skincare until your practitioner confirms it is safe.

Healing and Progress

  • Melasma typically improves gradually over a course of sessions.

  • Early changes may appear within 2–4 weeks.

  • Maximum improvement is usually seen after multiple treatments combined with ongoing sun protection and pigment-control skincare.

  • Melasma can reactivate with sun, heat, hormones or irritation — maintenance care is important.
